Creating board games

Gaming Workshops

Mobility in Latvia:
First, in Latvia, we all discover some games (ex: Worklike game, party games…).

Between the meetings:
The French students, to prepare French mobility, worked on real games.
There were two goals in that activity :
• understand some mechanisms for future games,
• have fun with the other European students

Mobility in France:
During the French week, 5 groups created five prototypes of a game.
The main idea was to create a game about "Jobs".
They worked about several points :
• the main goal of the game
• set up
• components
• game boards
• rules
• mechanisms

At the end of the French week, they made some tests with other students to improve the games.

Between the meetings:
Before the Italian mobility, the French Students worked on rules. All the games were tested at least 5 times. Some of the rules were cancelled and replaced by new ones. They especially worked on visions, on cooperative games and knowledge games. For the 5 French students chosen to go to Italy, they had to be able to explain the evolutions in each game.

Mobility in Italy:
All the Erasmus students tested once again the games.
They essentially worked on contents. Some of the games need for example cards, tiles, questions or a special board. This work could not be finished during this meeting.

Between the meetings:
Back from Italy, the French group try to finalize the rules of the games.
They discussed online with students from partners’ countries and between them. They decided what to print as the game’s components. Before the Polish Mobility, the French Students worked once again on all the parts. Test, components and even graphics. French team also made Corean students and Second year Students play and test the games. The Corean students were part of a International mobility and this event took place on the 28th of september 2019.

Mobility in Poland:
During mobility in Poland, students from each partner’s school worked together to create board game pawns in Autodesk Inventor Professional 2018. That is a computer-aided design application for 3D mechanical design, simulation, visualization, and documentation. Each of the designed shapes of the elements were saved in STL formats and prepared for 3D printing. Technical documentation with technical drawings of each pawn was also created.

Between the meetings:
Polish students continued their work on the game pawns after the meeting in Poland and in parallel, French students started to work on game pawns too, thanks to the training they had in Poland.
It took a lot of work to prepare the pawns for the board game. The students worked on improving each of the previously designed elements in Autodesk Inventor application.
The element names for each of the 5 board games took their names from the file names previously saved by the students. These names were used to create games:
• the cross board game
• the Job it board game
• the Part5 board game
• the Part3 board game (with six different shapes on top of the pawns: oval, circle, pentagon, square, triangle, rectangle)
• the Pizza board game

The pizza pawn was scaled up. The original form of the pawn has also been subtly modified. The final version has been increased four times in relation to the first version of the pawn. But, at the end, the pizza slice was replaced by the Pisa Tower, as there were famous monuments to represent the other 4 countries.

The following link allows you to download CAD files. To open the downloaded files, install Autodesk Inventor Professional 2018.
• the cross board game
• the Job it board game
• the Part5 board game
• the Part3 board game - oval, circle, pentagon, square, triangle, rectangle)
• the Pizza board game

The final result of their work was saved in stereolithography format (STL-Standard Triangle Language). The stl files can be easily opened without dedicated software. All you need is a computer with installed Windows 10 or any software available for mobile devices with Android and Apple operating system. The stereolithography files may be downloaded from the links below.
• the cross board game
• the Job it board game
• the Part5 board game
• the Part3 board game-oval, circle, pentagon, square, triangle, rectangle
• the Pizza board game v1, the Pizza board game v2

The next step was preparing each of the STL files for printing. The process was focused on finding the right 3D print parameters before start printing. Students made a series of tests and measurements for each of the pawns to find the right settings for the printer. Each test required pre-printing of the elements. Details of the settings for each printed pawn on the 3D printer were included in the technical documentation for the board game pawns.

The documentation in the PDF file format can be downloaded from the link below: link .

The follow pages in the documentation present technical drawings for pawns with measurements and a color scheme. The color scheme was given in the RGB system. The concept was that the printed parts will post-edited and painted in a defined color scheme.

Student used the selected printer settings and created files that contain commands for the 3d printer. These files were saved in the G-Code language. Created files with commands dedicated for Vertex Delta 3D printer can be downloaded here:
• the cross board game
• the Job it board game
• the Part5 board game
• the Part3 board game - oval, circle, pentagon, square, triangle, rectangle
• the Pizza board game v1, the Pizza board game v2

Below you will find photos of the printed parts and a few second-long video made during the printing process.

In order to get ready for the mobility in Croatia, French team improved the games and finished prototype version for the 4 games : Job It, Europe Quiz, Nobel Prize and Reverse Your Mind.

Unfortunately, the mobility to Croatia was cancelled due to COVID19.

Then, the French team finished the games printing each element such as boards, cards, rules… and thanks to a 3D-printer in black and/or grey color, new pawns and different components of the games. Polish team also printed some pawns as well in 3D.

During the Italian Mobility, all the Erasmus students tested once again the games. They essentially worked on contents.
Some of the games need for example cards, tiles, questions or a special board.

That work is not finished yet.

Back from Italy, the French group try to finalise the rules of the games.
We also discuss and decide what to print as game’s components are concerned.

Before the Polish Mobility, the French Students worked once again on all the parts. Test, Components and even graphics.

During the mobility in Poland, the board game pawns were developed. Each of the designed shapes of the elements were saved in STL formats and prepared for 3d printing. Technical documentation with technical drawings of each of the pawns was also created.
