Erasmus+ Science Days in Croatia

Science day in Croatia was held on the 6th of March 2020 (close to International Women’s Day).
The idea was to introduce and expand the knowledge of women in STEM.

  1. Around 400 students aged 14-18 participated directly or indirectly. 80 students prepared materials about women in STEM, and other students were involved as listeners or participants.
  2. The activities included: making bookmarks, preparing leaflets and handouts on the topic and distributing them, visiting classes, treasure hunt.
  3. The benefit was raising awareness about women in STEM, about science in general and showing our mainly female students that they can have a successful career in STEM in 21 century by presenting examples from the past when this was less usual, but still achievable.

Erasmus+ Science Days in Poland for the second time

The subsequent science days were realized at a much smaller scale. The reason was the fear of SARS-CoV-2 virus causing COVID-19.
Some competitions have been held as a continuation of last year's competitions.
Students took part in workshops where they did their own splicing of optical fiber.
The benefit for the students was the opportunity to practice with professional equipment used in telecommunications companies.

Erasmus+ Science Days in Latvia

There were 150 students from grades 2-11 and 25 preschoolers.
Pupils conducted several experiments in groups, explained them in thematic groups
and looked for professions that could be useful. Pupils learned how to use different Internet tools. Pupils drew conclusions: Experiments are needed to develop humanity, to find scientific explanations of various things,
to understand the surrounding processes. If we understand why this is happening,
we can think about what can be improved or prevented. It is more interesting to experiment when we cooperate! It is interesting to observe the results as we learn about different new ideas,
linking them to the learning process. Students enjoyed doing practical experiments. They developed the ability to discuss and express their views. They learned how to make a presentation on PREZI.com, Learningapps, Powerpoint They dare to speak to the audience.

Erasmus+ Science Days in Italy for the second time

11 th Feb  2020 The International Day of Women and Girls in Science and ISIS O. Romero

On the occasion of the 5th International Day of Women and Girls in Science,
to celebrate #WomenInScience,  some students of our school have wanted to underline
the role of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Enineering, Mathematics) in spite of prejudices
and gender stereotypes.
The students have dressed  commemorative stickers.

During the day of 11 February some slides were be shown at the entrance and on different ponits of
the school  of our schooconcerning scientists who have won prestigious awards and, in some cases,
undeservedly unknown and forgotten. They are certainly only small symbolic gestures
which however intend to encourage the participation of  women in Science as well
as supporting the claim of equal opportunities in the scientific career.

Erasmus+ Science Days in Italy

About 60 students from our school participated as guides in the workshops organized by our
institute, while about 560 pupils, along with their teachers, visited the workshops.
The workshops:
1) “Sustainable temperature”
Aims: bringing the children closer to the world of physics (temperature);
raising the children’s awareness of environmental issues, which are increasingly present
in our daily lives, through interactive activities such as the production of recycled paper.
2) “The magnificent 3”
Aims: showing the contribute of chemistry in the kitchen.
The guides showed how milk, lemon and fruit juice can be used and transformed (in the kitchen
and not), asking the children to find the right dosage, the correct operating procedures, the most
appropriate materials and tools in order to get the expected results. Five different activities were
proposed, among which how to make a battery using lemons or Coke, how to make fruit juice
caviar or Coke caviar, and how to make chocolate lollipops or chocolate spaghetti.
By taking part in the 2019 Bergamoscienza Festival, the guide-students took on the role of science
popularizers, offering the students from other schools a unique peer-to-peer learning experience.
They also provided the general public with an opportunity of informal education, which contributes
to strengthen the precious relationship between science and civic awareness.
It was observed that running the workshops enhanced the students’ communicative and relational
abilities, such as adapting to different interlocutors and situations, their ability to cope with
unexpected events, organize the work and share out tasks.

Erasmus+ Science Days in France

The science day at LEGTA Xavier Bernard school was held in partnership with Campus Agrinov.
Approximately 110 students from school attended the event. Some of them helped in the preparations, others took part in conferences and/or workshops and others conducted workshops. Other schools (mainly secondary schools) also had about 40 participants during some workshops and conferences.

Nearly 100 adults (mainly agricultural professionals) arrived at least for the welcome ceremony and some of them stayed for a few hours to take part in conferences and/or workshops.

Some conferences and workshops were held in cooperation with CampusAgrinov, focusing on soil, agriculture and climate change. There was also one conference dedicated to "Bee food related to agriculture and biodiversity", led by a former student from our school (graduates).

Furthermore, there were also workshops made and conducted by our students at the post-A level: "from seed to plate", and "how to reduce pesticides in today's agriculture, with a presentation of an application called "Appliphyt", as well as a workshop that the DNA school conducted on what kinds of organisms live in our soil under our feet... and how they are useful.

STEMs were everywhere during these 2 days (conferences and workshops). The students realized that agriculture and STEM can be a very important factor for jobs. They also became aware that thanks to the Erasmus Agency they can have a work placement abroad. They were interested in what other students had already done in the Erasmus+ Mathbuster project  It was a time to talk about various aspects, exchange opinions, and students also had to work together and adapt to the Erasmus+ programme.

Information about the two-day event is available in French language at https://drive.google.com/open?id=1MrPtW6H_TKTU3wscat-QJvkSFxQioImJ

Erasmus+ Science Days in Poland

Report on the Science Day events

The first edition of the festival dedicated to science was initiated in Zespół Szkół Elektronicznych i Licealnych in 2012. Since that date, every year in December two days are dedicated to celebrate these anniversaries. The official Polish name of the event is Dni Technika (Technician Days). In 2018 the event was enriched with Mathbuster Erasmus plus project activities. Accordingly, the Polish name for the event is also used together with the English name the science day.

The celebration programme was divided into three parts:
  • lectures,
  • meetings with companies representatives, exhibitions and presentations,
  • vocational competitions with prizes for winners
Programme points:

Lectures:
  • dr hab. Andrzej Wysmołka from the University of Warsaw "Grafen - future of  electronics"
  • dr Urszula Kaźmierczak from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw. "From Maria Skłodowska-Curie to modern radiotherapy" (A retrospective resume of the great Polish woman, a two-time Nobel Prize winner. A demonstration of scientific discoveries in use today’s radiotherapy)
  • A student in the 4th year of the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology "the search space of strong passwords"
  • dr Ryszard Piramidowicz from the Micro and Optoelectronics Institute at the Warsaw University of Technology "Laser as a source of light with unusual characteristics"
Exhibitions and presentations:
  • PLC programming industrial automation
  • secrets of the shortwave radio broadcasting
  • 3D printing and 3D scanning demonstration
  • The retro zone - the computers of the early 1990s
  • Optical fibre fusion splicing
  • Companies representatives from EBV, Infineon, OSRAM, Schrack
Vocational competitions:
  • Network emulation workshops on Cisco Packet Tracer application
  • Graphical atom representation. The model of the atom' s structure
  • Competition in interpreting parameters from technical documentation

The initiative of the Science Days has contributed to a better understanding of the fascinating world of science. For students it has become an opportunity to use not only the newest technology, but also to experience the history of this technology. We intended to offer students the benefit of experimenting with science and discovering the world through play and fun.

Next science day celebrations are planning on March 3-4 2020.
